Gurnard are long-lived, native fish found on sandy or silty bottoms at depths from 10 m to 390 m. They are one of the most commonly caught bycatch species in both the inshore and offshore trawl sectors, however, they seem resilient to fishing pressure and stocks are currently under-exploited.

Cooking
Gurnard is best prepared when pan fried. Best to defrost gurnard before cooking.
- Warm some olive oil in a non-stick pan. Place the gurnard fillets in the pan, skin side down.
- fry on a medium heat until skin is golden and crispy and its almost cooked through. Then flip the fillets and and finish them off.
- Goes will with a roasted vegetable (recommend potatoes)
