Sustainability

Angelfish are collected as bycatch along the continental shelf edge and higher slope along the West Coast from the Namibian border southwards, and particularly around the Agulhas Bank on the South Coast. There are some ecosystem-based management measures in place, such as limits on seabird mortality, precautionary catch limits on certain species, limits on targeting other by-catch species, and various spatial restrictions. Angelfish can be found on the SASSI green list. Please check the official page for more!

These Angelfish, also known as Atlantic pomfret, are a deep-water species that should not be confused with the same-named coral reef fishes found in tropical seas. The Angelfish has gold eyes and is silver in colour. Although it is not a real marine angelfish, it is often recognised and sold as “angelfish” in South Africa, where it is a common by catch of the hake fishery. The migratory patterns of the Atlantic Pomfret are highly dependent on the temperature of intermediate waters, but they are also influenced by secondary responses from density-dependence and surface climatic conditions. Crustaceans and mollusks are their main sources of food. This species is more of an offshore species that lives in the pelagic zone.

Perfect!

We love angel fish. We like to throw it on the fire, but chose to make ceviche from it this time and it was amazing!

Angel Fish

I would prefer this fish with its skin on as its all different thicknesses so it does not cook evenly.
