Effortless Defrosting Method

  • When you’re ready to enjoy your trout, defrosting it correctly is key to preserving its texture and flavour.
  • The best way to defrost the trout fillet is by placing it in the refrigerator for approximately 12-24 hours. This slow defrosting method ensures the trout remains at a safe temperature, reducing the risk of bacterial growth.
  • If you’re short on time, you can use a quicker method by placing the sealed trout fillet in a bowl of cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes to ensure it continues to defrost evenly. This method typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on the size of the fillet.
  • Avoid defrosting the trout at room temperature or using hot water, as this can lead to uneven defrosting and potential bacterial growth.


Oven Baking

  • Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to 180°C
  • Prepare the Trout: Remove the trout from packaging and place it skin-side down on a lined or lightly greased baking tray.
  • Bake: Put the trout in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, until heated through and slightly golden at the edges.
  • Serve: Let it rest for a few minutes after baking, then serve as desired.


Grilling for Extra Smokiness

  • Preheat your grill to medium-high.
  • Lightly oil the grill grates and the trout.
  • Grill skin-side down for 4-6 minutes, then flip for another 2-3 minutes.


  • Prepare the Braai for medium heat.
  • Oil and season the trout.
  • Place skin-side down on a Braai grid and cook for 5-7 minutes, then flip for a few more minutes.
